What Is DeepSeek ?
DeepSeek is a free AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT, used for tasks like math and coding. It follows a “reasoning” approach, building answers step by step while using less computing power, making it cheaper to run. Like other Chinese AI models, DeepSeek avoids sensitive political topics due to government restrictions. It was developed at a much lower cost than competitors, estimated at $6 million. The founder reportedly collected thousands of Nvidia A100 chips before U.S. export bans. After becoming the most downloaded free app on Apple’s U.S. App Store, DeepSeek faced cyberattacks and temporary service disruptions.
Who Founded DeepSeek?
DeepSeek was founded in December 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, who launched its first AI model the next year. A graduate of Zhejiang University in engineering and computer science, Liang was little known until now. His influence is growing, as seen in his recent meeting with China’s Premier Li Qiang. Unlike many U.S. AI leaders, Liang has a finance background. He runs High-Flyer, a hedge fund using AI for trading, which raised over 100 billion yuan in 2019. Liang believes China must innovate rather than copy the U.S. and says DeepSeek surprised Silicon Valley by being an innovator, not just a follower.
